About Us Goshu Karate-do Yonshin Kai
Yonshin-Kai is a martial arts college founded by four senior karate masters with over 25 years experience each. This experience has been gained in Australia, Japan and other parts of the world. Each Founding Instructor has master instructor international certifications and the rare distinction of having been awarded the Bubishi Master rank in Japan.
Yonshin Kai is about delivering authentic karate budo with modern day relevance. The training syllabus brings together the key applications from core karate styles that originated and developed in Okinawa and mainland Japan and combines them with supplementary learnings from the Chinese Nei Jia (soft) styles to create a complete and authentic karate system. The Yonshin Kai system has been based on traditional martial arts with origins dating back over two centuries.
The name Goshu Karate-do Yonshin Kai translates to Australian Karate Four Spirit Organisation. This name embodies the experience, learnings and teachings of the four master Founding Instructors. There is no other martial arts college in the world established in such a unique way.
In Australia we are senior students and have been graded by James Sumarac Kyoshi, Goju Ryu Kakurin Kan. In Japan we are senior students of and have been personally graded and awarded the rare Bubishi Master rank by Ohtsuka Tadahiko Hanshi, Goju Kensha Karate-do.
Our International College
Of Martial Arts
The Goshu Karate-do Yonshin Kai International College of Martial Arts was established in Victoria, Australia to facilitate the research and teaching of authentic karate budo. The 'authenticy' of karate budo seems to have been lost in the world as some modern day karate-ka seek short cuts to mastery and gradings. At our college there is no short cut. Gradings are not as important as mastery of technique. We value the understanding the real application, movement and generation of signficant power well into the latter years of training.
The college was founded in 2006 to propagate the traditional budo and philosophy of Ohstuka Sensei. The Yonshin Kan dojo (four spirit training hall) was established in 2007 as a centre for research and sharing the teachings and philosophy of Ohtsuka Sensei with others keen to understand authentic traditional budo.
Our VisionTradition, authenticy and mastery
"To deliver a complete and unique system of empty-hand self defense based on tradition, authenticy and mastery of technique."
Our Principles
Syllabus
We operate under core principles associated with professional and caring instruction. We teach our keiko as a form of self defense. We do not, and never have, promoted the use of undue force or using our teachings to initiate injury on others. Our main principles are:
- Karate begins and ends with respect and courtesy
- There is no first attack in karate unless it is for self defense
- First know yourself and then know others
- Mental technique before physical technique
- Keep your mind open and relaxed
- The world is your dojo
- Do not think about winning - think about not losing
- Respond in accordance with your opponent
- Use natural strategy, posture and weapons
- Kata is fixed - combat is fluid
- Training the mind and body results in the cultivation of a strong character and an indomitable spirit
